2013 witnessed a major cultural exchange programme between the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, University College of Cork, and the Galleria Civica di Modena, guided by the directors of the two institutions, Fiona Kearney and Marco Pierini.
With the exhibition The Artist’s Eye. Photographic Portraits of Artists from the Galleria Civica di Modena Collection, from 29th March to 7th July the Irish museum hosted a selection of some 80 shots taken by some of the great masters of photography, both from Italy and abroad, all focusing on the themes of the artist’s portrait, the selfportrait and performance images, selected from among the Italian Gallery’s own permanent photo collection.
The second step in this international collaboration project was the exhibition held at the Palazzina dei Giardini: Island. New Art from Ireland curated by Fiona Kearney, funded in part by Culture Ireland. From 20th June to 15th September, the videos, installations, sculptures, paintings and photographs of five Irish artists – Dorothy Cross, Damien Flood, Mark Garry, Martin Healy and Niamh O’Malley – are on show, together developing the theme of the island, while offering a contemporary snapshot of contemporary artistic research in Ireland.
